Seeing the Sights in Virginia
Jennifer Alden (Sunday, February 24, 2002)
At the zoo, we saw the famous pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian. (We're not sure which one this is.) Our favorites were the baby elephant and the golden lion tamarin monkeys. The gorilla, hippos (in and out of the water), and giraffes were also really fun.
Mount Vernon was beautiful. We weren't allowed to take pictures inside the mansion, but we did get some nice shots of General Washington's view of the Potomac and his famous false teeth (which are not made of wood, but of actual teeth). The nearby slave burial ground was beautiful and peaceful.
The natural history museum was much more interesting than we'd thought it would be. They had an exhibit of gems and minerals which included the Hope Diamond and a pair of (large) diamond earrings once owned by Marie Antoinette. We saw a great display of skeletons of all different sorts of animals. My (Jennifer's) favorite was the owl. The was a great insect zoo at the museum, and I got to hold a giant Madagascar hissing cockroach. I didn't know it was a cockroach until after I gave it back.
Last night, we went to Zig's Bar and Grill to see Lawrence's brother, Giles, and his band, mellowheadblue. It was a great show!
